Dairy UK said today (Wednesday May 24) that a commercially successful dairy sector is vitally important to the Government achieving its objectives on sustainability.

Elaborating on Dairy UK's response to Defra's consultation on the Rural Development Regulation, Peter Dawson, Policy Director of Dairy UK, said: “We've reminded Defra that Sustainability requires a commercially successful dairy sector. This means that Defra must be concerned to maintain the competitiveness of UK dairy farmers and processors.

Dairy UK urges rethink on whole milk in Government's junk food ruling

Dairy UK today questioned the Government’s decision to restrict the milk to be supplied to schools to skim and semi-skimmed milk. Although these milks have marginally more calcium than whole milk, the nutritional benefits of whole milk are valuable and should not be denied to school children.

The dairy sector can capitalise on the new ethics of business, the Chairman of Dairy UK said today (Thursday).

In a speech to leading dairy industry figures in London, David Curry, MP, said business is increasingly being judged on whether they are good corporate citizens. Social capitalism is becoming as important as financial capitalism as companies came to terms with the fact that globalisation has brought a new ethical environment as well as a new trading environment.

In its submission to the House of Commons EFRA Committee inquiry on the Government’s vision for the CAP, Dairy UK sets outs the six key points that have to be taken into account in the determination of agricultural policy. The six points focus on avoiding discrimination against UK agriculture and giving the industry time to adapt to further changes. "New Bout of CAP Reform Inevitable" Says Dairy UK Chairman

Agriculture faces a new period of change if the WTO World Trade talks give a new impetus to liberalisation. Far from being minimalist, the 2008/09 review of the CAP would need to be far-reaching to comply with a WTO Agreement. In particular, the deal to phase out export subsidies by 2013, and to have met the commitment that a substantial part will have to be eliminated in the first half of any implementation period, would spell the effective end of intervention.

Dairy UK warns against "Scrap the Pinta" plans

Dairy UK, the cross-industry body representing the UK dairy industry, today (Monday) said that proposals being considered by the European Parliament that could lead to the end of the pint of milk being sold in shops would undermine milk consumption and impose heavy costs on the UK dairy industry.

Dairy industry summit calls for maximum benefit from School Milk Subsidy

The dairy industry today (Wednesday) pledged to work with the Government to improve the effectiveness of school milk subsidies to schools.

Dairy UK, the cross-industry organisation representing the dairy industry, called a meeting of industry bodies to discuss the issue as part of its campaign to retain the subsidy which is paid to 12,000 primary schools.

The dairy industry and nutritional experts launched a vigorous campaign against proposals in a Government commissioned report to scrap the subsidy. The Government’s announced last week would not adopt the proposals put forward in the report by independent consultants.
