the milk to be supplied to schools to skim and semi-skimmed milk.
Although these milks have marginally more calcium than whole milk,

the Chairman of Dairy UK said today (Thursday).
In a speech to leading dairy industry figures in London, David
Curry, MP, said business is increasingly being judged on whether
they are good corporate citizens. Social capitalism is becoming
as important as financial capitalism as companies came to terms
with the fact that globalisation has brought a new ethical environment
as well as a new trading environment.

In its submission to the House of Commons EFRA Committee inquiry
on the Government’s vision for the CAP, Dairy UK sets outs
the six key points that have to be taken into account in the determination
of agricultural policy. The six points focus on avoiding discrimination
against UK agriculture and giving the industry time to adapt to
further changes. Dairy UK’s submission also provides detailed

"New Bout of CAP Reform Inevitable" Says Dairy
UK Chairman
Agriculture faces a new period of change if the WTO World Trade
talks give a new impetus to liberalisation. Far from being minimalist,
the 2008/09 review of the CAP would need to be far-reaching to comply
with a WTO Agreement. In particular, the deal to phase out export
subsidies by 2013, and to have met the commitment that a substantial
part will have to be eliminated in the first half of any implementation
period, would spell the effective end of intervention.

summit calls for maximum benefit from School Milk Subsidy
The dairy industry today (Wednesday) pledged to work with the
Government to improve the effectiveness of school milk subsidies
to schools.
Dairy UK, the cross-industry organisation representing the dairy
industry, called a meeting of industry bodies to discuss the issue
as part of its campaign to retain the subsidy which is paid to 12,000
primary schools.
The dairy industry and nutritional experts launched a vigorous
campaign against proposals in a Government commissioned report to
scrap the subsidy. The Government’s announced last week would
not adopt the proposals put forward in the report by independent
consultants.
