Collaboration with European Organisations

In addition to the wide range of schemes that are operating in the UK, there are also some that provide collaboration with one of more countries overseas, and a few of the key ones are shown below.

EUREKA is an intergovernmental initiative that aims to enhance European competitiveness through its support to businesses, research centres and universities which carry out pan-European projects to develop innovative projects, processes and services.
http://www.eureka.be/

It can offer project partners rapid access to a wealth of knowledge, skills and expertise across Europe and facilitates access to national public and private funding schemes.

It involves organisations from 38 European countries and is intended as a networking mechanism. If you have a project idea and wish to involve a business, research centre or university from one of the other countries within the EUREKA network to take the project forward, then you search for potential partners on the EUREKA website at http://www.eureka.be . Also, your project idea can be advertised on the website and circulated around the EUREKA network.

Although EUREKA itself is not a funding mechanism, it can as act as a potential partner programme for the DTI Grant for R&D, as you can use EUREKA to form collaborations and the Grant for R&D to fund the UK element of the project.

CORDIS (Community Research & Development Information Service) is the Commission’s dedicated Research, Design and Technology and Innovation website. It contains all the information necessary for the preparation and submission of a proposal and has a specific area for each scheme. There are also links to sub-themes and all kinds of background and current information, such as open calls. http://cordis.europa.eu/en/home.html
FP7 is the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. This is the EU’s main instrument for funding research in Europe and it runs from 2007 to 2013. It is made up of four main blocks of activities plus a fifth specific programme on nuclear research.
http://cordis.europa.eu/en/home.html

FP7 will aim to build on the accomplishments of the previous research framework programme, and will be implemented through four specific programmes. The 'Cooperation' programme will support research cooperation in a number of key thematic areas. 'Ideas' will fund investigator-driven research through a newly created European Research Council (ERC). The 'People' programme will support training and researchers' career development, while 'Capacities' will fund the coordination and development of research infrastructure, regional research clusters, international cooperation and closer ties between science and society.

The European Commission invites bids through calls for proposals in each area, typically one or two each year. What all projects have in common is that they are innovative and relate in some way to the development of novel technology that can be exploited in the form of new competitive products, processes or services.

Any company, university, research centre, organisation or individual, legally established in any country, may participate in a collaborative project (known as an indirect action) provided that the minimum conditions laid down in the Rules for Participation in FP7 (RFP), Chapter II, Section 1, p.12, have been met.
