The Grant for Research and Development
This is a grant which helps with the costs of an R&D project, which could include: staff pay, materials, sub-contracting and capital equipment. It is administered for the DTI by the nine English Regional Development Agencies (see next entry for contact details) and there are four types available:

Micro Project Grant
This helps with the development of a low-cost prototype of a product of process, to be completed and ready for commercialisation within 12 months. It can be for any amount between £2,500 and £20,000 and is for 50% of the project costs.

To be eligible you must be planning to set up, or be currently running, a business in England with fewer than 10 full time employees and an annual turnover of no more than €2m or an annual balance sheet total of no more than €2m.


Research Project Grant
This grant helps to investigate the technological and commercial feasibility of turning innovative technology into a new product, process or service. The projects should take place between 6 and 18 months. The grant can be between £20,000 and £75,000 and is for 60% of the project costs (although the rate is 70% in Tier 1 Assisted Areas and 65% in Tier 2 Assisted Areas).

To be eligible you must be planning to set up, or be currently running, a business in England with fewer than 50 full-time employees and an annual turnover of no more than €10m or an annual balance sheet of no more than €10m.


Development Project Grant
This is a grant to help with the development of a pre-production prototype of a new product or process involving a significant technological advance. The project should take between 6 and 36 months to complete. The grant can be between £20,000 and £200,000 and is for 35% of the project costs (although the rate is 45% in Tier 1 Assisted Areas and 40% in Tier 2 Assisted Areas).

To be eligible you must be planning to set up, or be currently running, a business in England with fewer than 250 full-time employees and an annual turnover of no more than €50m or an annual balance sheet of no more than €43m.

Exceptional Development Project Grant
This is a grant that helps with the development of a new technology that is of strategic importance to UK industry and the project must have the potential to deliver significant benefits for industrial productivity of quality of life. A grant of up to £500,000 is available, covering up to 35% of the project costs. The project should take between 6 and 36 months to complete.

To be eligible you must be planning to set up, or be currently running, a business in England with fewer than 250 full-time employees and an annual turnover of no more than €50m or an annual balance sheet of no more than €43m.

The Grant for Research and Development is discretionary and there is no guarantee you will be offered a grant, even if your business and project is eligible. If you decide to apply for any of the grants listed above, you should contact your local RDA (see below) or Business Link (phone: 0845 600 9006) where an adviser can confirm your eligibility and help you to prepare and submit an application.

Agriculture Development Scheme

It is a scheme that provides project grants to farmers and growers in England to improve their competitiveness through better marketing. Projects will need to be about the organisation, promotion, coordination or facilitation of the marketing of agricultural products, including non-food crops such as bio-fuels.
